With an extensive range of amenities and activities including live music performances, pool and snooker tables, dart boards, TAB betting facilities, and 30 gaming machines, plus one of the largest private libraries in the nation, we provide tremendous variety to our members, their guests, and visitors from affiliated clubs.

Our special interest groups encompass many of the most sought-after activities in the club scene and frequently participate in events and competitions across the country.

Our Heritage

The Petone Working Men's Club and Literary Institute was founded in 1887, more than 130 years ago, and boasts a rich and enduring history in Petone. The Peels building on Jackson Street became the Club's inaugural home when it was leased in 1887, serving as premises for three years before the club relocated to the Priests building in 1890. When the Combers Property was acquired in 1896, the club had already developed an impressive membership base and been honoured with a prestigious Queen's Charter.

The Former Clubhouse: 1927 – 1977

With membership continually growing and demand increasing for more contemporary facilities, the original building was demolished in 1927 to make room for a new structure on the same location. This replacement became affectionately known among members as the "Old Club" and served as the primary facility for half a century. In 1977, the decision was made that the club required another significant upgrade.

Our Present Home: 1977 – Today

On 6th August 1977, the doors opened at our current Udy Street location. Following substantial expansions including a new restaurant and games room, the Petone Working Men's Club and Literary Institute now proudly serves a membership approaching 10,000 and offers first-class facilities.

The Executive Committee

The Petone Club operates as a not-for-profit organisation governed by our Executive Committee. These members are elected every two years and hold responsibility for all aspects of club governance.
